Year 12 Geographers Explore "Changing Places" at Plymouth University

Yesterday our Year 12 students delved deeper into the A-level theme of "Changing Places" with a enriching trip to Plymouth University.

The day offered a fascinating glimpse into the dynamic worlds of urban and rural landscapes, exploring how these environments evolve over time, adapt to new realities, and even reinvent themselves.

Learning from the Experts

The morning session featured captivating lectures delivered by university faculty. Students gained valuable insights into:

  • The shifting dynamics of urban and rural areas: From historical changes to contemporary trends, they explored how these landscapes have been reshaped by various factors.
  • The power of rebranding: The case study of Plymouth's "Ocean City" branding sparked discussions on how place marketing strategies can attract growth and investment.

Christchurch: Reimagining After Disaster

Following a well-deserved lunch break and a chance to explore the bustling Plymouth University campus, the students had a  workshop on the inspiring case of Christchurch, New Zealand. Students grappled with how this city, devastated by the 2011 earthquake, used this tragedy as an opportunity to rethink and improve its urban environment. This session provided valuable insights into the resilience of communities and their potential for positive transformation.

A Day of Enrichment

The Plymouth University trip proved to be a truly rewarding experience for our Year 12 Geographers. They gained valuable exposure to university-level learning, interacted with experts in the field, and explored real-world examples of "Changing Places."

Furthermore, the day offered a taste of university life, potentially helping students confidently look towards life after Kingsley Devon.
