Fintan’s Story of Strength Through Isolation

Fintan’s Story of Strength Through Isolation

Five Years On: Reflecting on Resilience at Kingsley

As we mark five years since the first national lockdown, we’ve been reflecting on the incredible strength and resilience shown by our Kingsley community during such uncertain times. Amongst the many stories of courage and determination, one that stands out is that of former Kingsley student, Fintan Hood.

Fintan, now studying at the University of York, spent an astonishing 448 days shielding at home due to a rare immune condition. His story, recently shared with BBC Devon, gives a powerful insight into what life was like for so many who were forced into long periods of isolation.

Describing his experience as "surreal" and "harrowing", Fintan speaks with remarkable honesty about the emotional and physical challenges he faced. Shielding for such an extended period meant long days of solitude and uncertainty, but Fintan’s strength carried him through. He credits his family for their unwavering support and love during that time, a reminder of how important connection is, even in isolation.

What has stayed with us most is the memory of Fintan’s return to Kingsley. After those long, difficult months away, the Kingsley community welcomed him back in the way only Kingsley can — students and staff lined the driveway to greet him, a moving show of support and solidarity. It was a moment that captured the very heart of our school: a community that stands together, no matter what.

Fintan’s story is not just about the hardships of isolation, but about resilience, hope, and the power of community. His journey reminds us how far we’ve all come, and how strength can be found even in the most challenging times.

We are so incredibly proud of you Fintan.
