Health & Social Care (Years 10-11)

Summary

Health and Social care covers a broad selection of careers and knowledge from both the Health and the Care sector. Students gain a good understanding of different groups of people spanning the ages from birth to death. They will understand the purpose of both the care and health sectors and the job roles within these.  Students will gain an understanding of the skills they will need to work in these job roles and what the workplace may look like.


Course Details

Health and Social Care will equip students with the knowledge, understanding, skills and encouragement they need to interact with others in a professional and practical way. It will give them the ability to apply the principles of caring for others in a variety of situations.

Students will be able to make informed decisions about a wide range of further learning opportunities and career pathways and develop vital life skills so that they can look after the physical, social, emotional and intellectual wellbeing of themselves and others.

There is no formal need for work experience, this GCSE focuses on application of skills to ensure students develop a thorough understanding of working with others in the Health & Social Care setting. At its heart, this qualification focuses on nurturing students’ compassion and professionalism while widening their understanding of the world.

Health & Social Care skills are split into seven core topics:

  • Provision & Services
  • Human lifestyle development
  • Job roles
  • Legislation & policies
  • Care needs and the planning cycle
  • Partnership working

Students will spend the majority of time in the classroom embedding their new knowledge in the application of tasks such as case studies and role play.  All practical tasks are completed to develop a student's understanding of Health & Social Care. Where possible trips, visits, guest speakers and work experience will be added to the curriculum.
