Navigating Mental Health in Schools

Navigating Mental Health in Schools

How Kingsley Devon Prioritises Student Mental Health

Many schools today are struggling to meet the increasing demands of students' mental health. It's a concerning reality that, according to a recent survey by the mental health charity Mind, 78% of young people reported that school had negatively impacted their mental health, and, 96% stated that their mental health had affected their schoolwork at some point. These statistics highlight the urgent need to prioritise mental health in schools to support students more effectively.

Societal changes have significantly expanded the role of educational institutions, making it more critical than ever for schools to safeguard and nurture young people. At Kingsley, an independent school in Devon, we not only acknowledge this shift but embrace a holistic approach to education. We recognize the vital connection between mental and physical health, integrating wellbeing into our daily curriculum for all students.

What Factors Are Making Youth Mental Health Worse?

One in six children aged 5-16 are likely to have a mental health problem. This figure has gone up by 50% in the last three years. Factors like social media, academic pressure, and family issues contribute to this, and schools are uniquely positioned to identify early signs and provide support.

  • The Pros and Cons of Social Media: While social media allows young people to express themselves and connect with friends, it also presents challenges. Over half of young people say online interactions positively impact their friendships, but the digital space can also invite comparison, affecting self-worth and identity development. Cyberbullying remains a concern, particularly for those with mental health issues, who are twice as likely to report online bullying.
  • The Pandemic: Young people experienced higher levels of depression, social and emotional difficulties, and behavioral issues during the pandemic, which can still today have an impact.
  • School Pressure: Academic demands and the overall pressure of school life can negatively affect students' mental health. Children with mental health disorders tend to miss more school than their peers, having a direct impact on attendance and educational outcomes.
  • High Exposure to Stressors: Students today face significant academic and extracurricular demands, along with the effects of digital connectivity, such as social comparison and cyberbullying.
  • Poverty and Money Worries: Financial hardship is a significant stressor for many children. Nearly a third of all children worry about their families' financial stability, which rises to almost half among those from low-income backgrounds. With the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, more families are being pushed into poverty, increasing the likelihood of mental health issues.
  • Lack of Access to External Mental Health Services: Not all families can access mental health care due to cost, availability, or social stigma, making school-based resources essential for bridging the gap.

At Kingsley, we understand that students' wellbeing is as important as their academic success. As such, our approach integrates mental health awareness seamlessly into the educational fabric of our school. We believe fostering a healthy mind is essential for achieving educational excellence and personal fulfillment.

Kingsley's Approach to Nutrition and Health

It is well known that physical activity and a healthy diet in childhood have been shown to improve educational attainment, and physical and mental health outcomes.  Our school meals at Kingsley are designed to be nutritious and balanced, providing students with the energy they need to succeed academically and maintain their mental health. We also offer nutrition workshops that teach students about healthy eating habits and the importance of a balanced diet.

Cultivating a Safe and Open Environment

We ensure that students can express themselves freely without fear of judgment. By promoting open dialogue about mental health, we work to destigmatize issues and encourage students to seek help when needed. Regular assemblies, dedicated wellbeing days, and open forums allow students and staff to discuss mental health openly, promoting understanding and support throughout the school community.

Proactive Policies and Practices

Our clear anti-bullying policies and proactive measures help create a safe student environment. Regular feedback sessions with students allow us to identify and address any concerns promptly, ensuring that everyone feels supported.

At Kingsley, we prioritize creating a supportive and inclusive atmosphere where every student feels valued, respected, and safe. Our commitment to student wellbeing is reflected in several key initiatives to foster a positive school culture and helping a child fulfil their potential.

Early Intervention and Support Services

Recognising early signs of distress and providing timely interventions is key to effective mental health management. Kingsley has implemented a structured programme where specific roles, such as school counsellors, pastoral care staff, and trained teachers, monitor and provide the initial support. These professionals are equipped to identify signs of anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues early on.

Our resources also include a dedicated wellbeing centre, a safe space for students to relax, reflect, and seek help when needed. This centre is staffed by mental health professionals who are always available for support and guidance.

Integrative Learning and Well-Being Programs

The curriculum at Kingsley includes dedicated sessions that integrate mental health education into the broader learning process. These sessions help students understand and manage their mental health, develop coping strategies, and build resilience.

Our wellbeing programs are embedded in everyday school activities. For example, we incorporate mindfulness sessions into the school day, where students learn techniques to manage stress and improve concentration. Additionally, our physical education program emphasises the link between physical health and mental wellbeing, encouraging students to engage in regular exercise as a means of maintaining their mental health.

We also offer specialised courses on emotional intelligence, teaching students how to recognise and manage their emotions effectively. These courses help students build strong interpersonal skills and foster a positive self-image.

Wellbeing Days and Resilience Workshops

Wellbeing days are a regular feature at Kingsley, dedicated to promoting mental health awareness and providing students with the tools they need to manage their wellbeing. These days include workshops on topics, such as stress management, healthy relationships, and self-care.

The Outdoor Education Pathway follows the Resilience Tight-rope curriculum, developed by Inspiring Learning, and delivered by our expert team of outdoor educators. The programme helps to build resilience in young people through its component parts of adaptability, knowing yourself, being responsible, sense of belonging and self-improvement.

Mindfulness and Meditation

Mindfulness and meditation are integral parts of our mental health strategy at Kingsley. We offer daily mindfulness sessions where students can practice techniques that help them stay present and manage stress. These sessions are led by trained instructors who guide students through various mindfulness exercises.

Research has shown that mindfulness can significantly improve mental health by reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression. At Kingsley, we have seen firsthand the positive impact that mindfulness has on our students' wellbeing. Many students report feeling more focused, calm, and better able to handle the pressures of school life.

Stress Management Techniques

Stress is a common issue for students, and at Kingsley, we provide a range of stress management techniques to help students manage their stress effectively. This includes teaching students how to recognise the signs of stress and providing them with practical tools to manage it.

Techniques such as deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, and visualisation are taught as part of our stress management program. These techniques are easy to learn and can be used anywhere, making them valuable tools for managing stress in everyday life

Peer Support Programs

Peer support is a powerful tool in promoting mental health, and at Kingsley, we have a robust peer support program. Students who have been trained through The Diana Award provide a listening ear and offer support to their fellow students. This program helps to build a supportive community where students feel comfortable seeking help from their peers.

Peer supporters are selected based on their empathy, listening skills, and willingness to help others. They receive comprehensive training that equips them with the skills needed to provide effective support. This training covers topics such as active listening, confidentiality, and how to refer students to professional help if needed.

Welfare Support Services

Our welfare support services at Kingsley are designed to meet the diverse needs of our student body. We offer individual support sessions where students can discuss their concerns in a confidential setting. These sessions are tailored to each student's needs and can address various issues, from academic stress to personal challenges.

In addition to individual support, we offer group therapy sessions where students can connect with others experiencing similar issues. These sessions provide a supportive environment where students can share their experiences and learn from each other.

We also have crisis intervention services for students who need immediate help. Our Head of Welfare is always available to provide support and ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students.

Encouraging Parental Involvement

Understanding that mental health support extends beyond the school environment, Kingsley actively involves parents in its mental health initiatives, on our journey towards the Wellbeing Award for Schools. Regular discussions are held to educate parents on recognising mental health issues and supporting their children’s mental well-being.

We regularly provide parents with resources and tools to help them support their children at home. This includes guides on how to talk to their children about mental health, tips for creating a supportive home environment, and information about external support services.

Our school also hosts regular parent-teacher meetings where mental health is a key topic of discussion. These meetings allow parents to discuss their concerns with teachers and counsellors, ensuring a collaborative approach to their child's wellbeing.

Nurturing Mental Health in Boarding Life at Kingsley Devon

At Kingsley Devon, we understand that boarding life presents unique challenges and opportunities for students' mental health. Our boarding program is designed to offer a nurturing and supportive environment that feels like a second home, prioritizing the wellbeing of each student. With a focus on creating a sense of community and belonging, our boarding houses foster positive relationships, encouraging open communication between students and staff. House parents and staff are trained to support mental health needs, offering guidance and a listening ear to ensure that students feel comfortable and secure during their time away from home.

We integrate mental health and wellbeing into daily life by providing a range of activities that promote balance, including physical exercise, social events, and mindfulness practices. Regular check-ins with boarding staff help monitor each student's wellbeing, and additional resources, such as counseling services, are readily available. Living in the scenic North Devon countryside further enhances students' mental health, as they have daily access to the outdoors for relaxation and recreation. This comprehensive approach ensures that boarding at Kingsley is not only a place for academic growth but also a supportive space where students can thrive emotionally and socially.

The Role of Technology in Mental Health Support

Digital Wellbeing Tools

In today’s digital age, technology plays a significant role in mental health support. At Kingsley, we leverage digital tools to support our students. This includes apps for mindfulness and meditation, online counseling services, and digital resources for mental health education.

Technology-Enhanced Learning

Technology is fully integrated into our learning and support systems to enhance the student experience. The provision of tailored technology assistance is essential to our SEND students. With proper evaluation and support, technology can make a substantial difference to SEND student's wellbeing and academic achievement.

Community Partnerships and External Resources

Collaboration with Mental Health Organisations

Kingsley has established strong partnerships with local community action groups and national mental health organisations. These collaborations enhance our school environment and our ability to provide comprehensive mental health support to our students. External experts regularly visit our school to conduct workshops, train staff, and offer specialised services to students.

Training and Development for Staff

Professional Development Programs

Effective mental health support starts with our staff. We invest in ongoing professional development programs to ensure that our teachers and staff are equipped to support the mental health needs of our students. These programs include training on recognising the signs of mental health issues, providing initial support, and making appropriate referrals.

Mental Health First Aid

Many of our staff members are trained in Mental Health First Aid, which equips them with the skills to provide initial support to students experiencing mental health issues. This training covers a wide range of topics, including how to handle a mental health crisis and how to support students with ongoing mental health concerns.

Measuring and Evaluating Success

Measuring the Impact

To ensure the effectiveness of our mental health strategies, Kingsley undertakes regular assessments and feedback sessions with students and staff. These evaluations help us refine our approaches and ensure that our support services meet the evolving needs of our community.

We use a variety of tools to measure the impact of our mental health programs, including surveys, focus groups, and individual feedback sessions. These tools provide valuable insights into what is working well and where improvements can be made.

For example, we conduct bi-annual wellbeing surveys from GL Assessment that assess students' mental health and their perceptions of the support they receive. The results of these surveys are compared with national trends amongst young people and used to make data-driven decisions about our mental health initiatives, ensuring that we continuously improve our services. We also survey our staff every 4 weeks using the TES Staff Wellbeing Survey and benchmark the results against the national picture in schools.

Adapting to Changing Needs

The mental health needs of students are constantly evolving, and at Kingsley, we are committed to staying responsive to these changes. We regularly review our mental health strategies and adapt them to meet the current needs of our students.

This proactive approach ensures that we remain at the forefront of mental health support in education. By staying flexible and responsive, we can provide the best possible support to our students.

Conclusion

The correlation between mental health and education cannot be overstated. As an school, Kingsley is deeply committed to our students' mental and emotional wellbeing. By addressing mental health proactively, we can help our students not only succeed academically but also develop the resilience and skills needed to thrive in life.

As we look to the future, Kingsley remains committed to innovation and continuous improvement in our mental health initiatives. We are constantly exploring new ways to enhance our support services and provide the best possible care to our students.

By continuing to prioritise mental health, Kingsley School Devon sets a standard for educational institutions everywhere, demonstrating that with the right support, students can achieve both academic success and personal wellbeing.
